Dury’s Lighting Specialist, Nick Coury, Cr. Photog., writes about his experience with the Cheetah QBox:
Recently I was asked to do headshots that were all on location. Really, it was several locations so it would be a “run-and-gun” type of session. I knew that I wanted to use a soft box, but didn’t want to drag around my studio lights or even the Quadra Ranger. I had intended to use the Cheetah QBox for some time; I just haven’t had an occasion to use it up till now. This was the perfect job for it! On my way out of the store I grabbed one off the display and put it in my trunk. I thought I grabbed the 24” version, but by mistake I took the 16”. I didn’t realize it was the smaller one until I was setting it up and by then it was too late.
My weapon of choice would be a Nikon D700 body so I could use the Commander Mode for off camera flash. I put my SB900 speedlight on the Cheetah box mount, and that on a Cheetah stand. I chose to attach the included fabric grid so I could be very selective about the direction of light. It is always a little risky trying out equipment on a job; but it was a job that could be replicated if needed. Besides, I could see what I was getting and it looked great! These images are all taken with the 16” Cheetah QBox as my main light. The only additional light is an occasional SB800 that was used as a kicker with no modifier on it. I think the performance of this box rivals gear that is twice as expensive. Metal mounts will last a long time and there are a lot of thoughtful “no cost” extras included. These QBox’s are priced super affordably! The 16” is $79.99 and the 24” only $112.99. Add an 8’ Cheetah stand for $88.88 and you have a killer location lighting kit.
