Introducing the M9
The combination of an extremely high-resolution sensor, high performance M-Lenses and careful processing of the digital data provides the best picture results under all conditions with the LEICA M9. The easy handling and simple menus of the camera allow the photographer to concentrate on taking the pictures and not the controls.
Sensor
Kodak's proprietary CCD Sensor for the LEICA M9 is optimized for the unique optical consideration of the Leica M-Lens System. With the extremely high resolution of the sensor, the LEICA M9 delivers outstanding image quality. With the sensor in the M9, we have continued the development of offset microlens to precisely match the imaging characteristics of M System lenses. The microlens design has been optimized to accept light striking the sensor at oblique angles and reduce vignetting, allowing existing Leica M-Lenses to retain full compatibility in digital capture. A low pass or anti-aliasing filter that eliminates fine detail, was deliberately excluded from the design to fully benefit from the high resolution of Leica M-Lenses. Any Moire patterns are eliminated by the digital signal processing of the camera. The optimized pixel size of the CCD sensor reduces the need for digital post processing and produces an unequaled natural picture effect. Rich contrast, extremely high resolution and natural colors are the result across the entire frame.
Lenses
With the LEICA M9, all Leica M-Lenses offer the same angle of view as on an analog camera. For the first time, the full potentional of M-Lenses can be realized on a digital camera. Continuing the tradition of system compatibility, almost all Leica M-Lenses since 1954 can be used on the M9. Utilizing high precision mechanics and optics, the current range of Leica M-Lenses offer extraordinarily high quality and are ideally suited for digital photography. Leica's tight tolerances and quality standards, applied to the individual components of every lens, guarantees that every lens meets the strict requirements for digital photography.
The extremely efficient sensor of the M9 demands high resolution, all of the new M-Lenses exceed this requirement. The excellent correction of optical defects and the high resolution make these lenses ideal for digital photography. The current M-Lenses are delivered with 6-bit coding on the bayonet, that is optically read by the M9. With this information, the M9 can compensate for vignetting. Lens information is included in the EXIF data of the file and in system flashes like the LEICA SF 58, the reflector position is automatically adjusted to the focal length of the lens.
Viewfinder
The Leica rangefinder system distinguishes the LEICA M9 from the single-lens reflex cameras and compact cameras. The rangefinder is ideal for reportage, available light and discrete and unobtrusive photography. The accuracy of the rangefinder on the Leica M9 is independent of the lens. Therefore, its accuracy with a wide angle lens is 4 times greater than a single lens reflex camera. The high contrast rangefinder patch in the middle of the viewfinder guarantees fast, precise, and exact focusing even in extremely low light.
Shutter
The LEICA M9 controls a new especially quiet metal laminent shuter blades, controlled by a microprocessor, that enables exposure time to 1/4000 second. Even in bright environments, the photographer retains the freedom to utilize the selective focus of an open aperture. Through the flash synch time of 1/180 second, daylight flash use is possible.
Intuitive Operation
The simple menus of the LEICA M9 allow the photographer to concentrate on the picture as opposed to the operation of the camera.
Innovative Flash Technology
In the LEICA M9, the M TTL flash technology is used. This enables the photographer to control light in a precise and creative way when taking pictures. The flash strength is determined precisely by the nature of light conditions. In connection with the time automatic control mechanism, the car-Slow-Syncfunction provides for an especially protective brightening of the subject, with which the longest exposure time can be adjusted manually or in use by 6-bit coded lenses automatically.
Workflow
The LEICA M9 comes with the Online download of the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, a professional digital workflow solution for the Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom offers extensive functions for the administration, preparation and edition of the digital pictures, JPEG or in the DNG format. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with its fine control possibilities guarantees quality. At the same time the 14-bit color information delivered by the CCD is preserved in the 16-bit workflow of Lightroom.
Materials and construction
The housing of the LEICA M9 is made of magnesium alloy which is suited to the rigors of professional use.
Compatibility with M8 & M8.2 Accessories
Many of the accessories such as the battery, hand grip(different type of leather), for the M8 and M8.2 are compatible with the LEICA M9.
